Coalition for Sustainable AI - Building AI that respects planetary boundaries
In April 2026, Skytells joined the Coalition for Sustainable AI—a global initiative co-initiated by France, UNEP, and ITU. This membership reflects our commitment to building AI systems that contribute to environmental solutions while minimizing their own ecological footprint.
The coalition brings together leading technology companies, research institutions, governmental organizations, and civil society to ensure AI development aligns with the UN's 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals. We work alongside Microsoft, Nvidia, Cisco, IBM, Stanford University, INRIA, and hundreds of other organizations committed to sustainable AI deployment.
Our participation means we're not working on sustainability in isolation. We're part of a coordinated international effort to develop standards, share best practices, and ensure AI becomes a force for environmental stewardship rather than environmental harm.
About the Coalition
The Coalition for Sustainable AI is a multistakeholder global initiative launched at the AI Action Summit in Paris in February 2025. Co-initiated by France in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the coalition brings together corporations, research institutions, governments, NGOs, and investors committed to ensuring AI contributes positively to environmental and climate objectives.
The coalition addresses what its members recognize as "two defining challenges of our era"—the environmental crisis and the digital revolution—ensuring these forces work together rather than in opposition. With participation from organizations across six continents, the coalition creates a platform for developing standards, sharing best practices, and coordinating action on sustainable AI deployment.
Members work toward a shared vision: AI development that aligns with the UN's 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to climate action and environmental protection.
Co-Initiators
The coalition was co-initiated by France and three UN agencies, providing both governmental authority and international coordination.
France
Leading the coalition with support from the French Ministry of Ecological Transition and multiple national agencies including ADEME, Arcep, Bpifrance, and CNNum.
UN Environment Programme (UNEP)
The leading global environmental authority, bringing decades of experience in coordinating international environmental action and scientific assessment.
International Telecommunications Union (ITU)
The UN's specialized agency for information and communication technologies, providing technical expertise on digital infrastructure and connectivity.
UNESCO
Coordinating high-level sessions on sustainable AI at major international gatherings, connecting technical work to broader questions of digital rights and inclusion.
Core Principles
The coalition's work centers on ensuring AI contributes positively to environmental objectives while minimizing its own environmental footprint.
Green AI
Reducing the environmental footprint of AI systems through energy-efficient architectures, lifecycle impact measurement, and transparent reporting.
AI for Green
Harnessing AI capabilities to accelerate climate action, environmental monitoring, resource optimization, and disaster response at unprecedented scales.
Standardized Measurement
Developing consistent methods to assess AI's environmental impacts across energy consumption, water use, and e-waste generation.
Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration
Bringing together governments, academia, civil society, and industry to develop shared standards and best practices.
Transparency & Reporting
Establishing frameworks for organizations to transparently report the environmental impact of their AI products and services.
Research & Innovation
Prioritizing development of AI technologies with optimized algorithms to reduce computational complexity and minimize resource usage.
Skytells' Commitments
Our membership reflects commitments we've already begun implementing in our platform architecture and operational practices.
Architectural Efficiency
Our Cloud Agents platform orchestrates specialized agents that activate only when needed, reducing computational overhead without compromising capability.
Measurement & Transparency
We're establishing processes to track energy consumption, model efficiency, and infrastructure optimization across our platform.
Standards Development
We participate in coalition workstreams on lifecycle impact assessment, reporting frameworks, and multi-agent architecture best practices.
Environmental Applications
Exploring how our agent orchestration capabilities can support environmental monitoring, resource optimization, and climate adaptation use cases.
Coalition Membership
The coalition has assembled a membership spanning major technology companies, leading research institutions, governmental organizations, NGOs, and investors across six continents.
